A Checklist For Hiring Your Contractor

Hiring the right contractor for your job will save your project time, money and frustration. When looking for that company, you must ensure they provide effective communication, value for money and trust. The steps below will help you choose the best candidate for your project.
1. Create a list of contractors
The internet is a great place to find contractors. Another great source is to ask friends/family who have had similar work done, the local homebuilders or renovators associations or a local building supply store.
2. Conduct In-Person Interviews
By doing this, you get to know the candidates and their work experience. Take notes to compare and narrow down your list.
Questions may include:
How long have you been in business?
What is your speciality?
Will you hire sub contractors or bring your own crew?
Are you licensed?
What kind of work schedule will you follow?
How do you clean up?
How do you deal with unforeseen problems?
What warranty do you provide?
Do you provide a contract?
3. Contact references
Speaking to past clients is a great way to see if the contractor is the best to hire. Some questions to ask references may include:
Did the contractor keep you informed throughout the project?
Were there any problems?
Did the project finish on time?
Did they stay within your budget?
Were you happy?
Would you use them again?
4. Request detailed estimates
Be specific on your vision for the project and get an estimate that reflects that vision. On average, three detailed estimates is enough to make a sound decision on your project.
5. Ask for a written contract
Once you have selected your contractor, a written contract should be made. This contract should include a construction schedule, payment schedule, detailed scope of work and everything you have been promised for the price.
